Truly Serene

Wednesday night we drove across town to meet Ben and Nancy and their kids at Harkness Memorial State Park for a picnic and some hanging out. It had been a hectic day and took us (or at least me) some time to decompress. But in a setting like that, with great scenery and even better company, it was inevitable. After we arrived the kids rode their bikes around the trails while racquetball partners Chad and Ben tossed the Frisbee and Nancy and I laid out the spread.

After we devoured a delicious meal, the guys took the kids for a run on the beach while Nancy and I guarded our picnic site. I don’t use that term lightly. Within minutes squirrels and birds were trying to scavenge Nancy’s beautiful cupcakes, and soon we caught sight of a skunk. Our striped friend decided to make a repeat appearance after dessert, in search of picnic remnants under the lines of tables. The kids hid under our table at first while the adults looked on, pleasantly amused. But when the skunk turned to face us and started moving our way, even we shied away. (It was at that point that the kids got really scared.)

Brazen wildlife notwithstanding, we managed to enjoy a very laid back and serene evening. One in which it felt like time stood still as we just absorbed the beauty of the Long Island Sound and the company of dear ones.
