Now that we’ve been home for a whole week, we’re starting to see some fabulous summer weather amid still-frequent thunderstorms. And we’re taking full advantage.
Last Thursday night we met some friends in the Connecticut College Arboretum for Flock Theatre’s performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. We’d shared a brief background on Shakespeare with Gavin and Arwen in connection with our recent Verona visit, and this was the perfect opportunity to expose them to his work. We read through a brief summary that afternoon to familiarize ourselves with
the characters and storyline. That preparation, together with the nature of the play itself and the skilled actors, had Gavin rolling with laughter and Arwen likewise engaged throughout the two-hour production. Partway into the second half, Gavin inched his way over to me to ask if we were up past my bedtime. On our way out I tried to persuade Arwen to have her picture taken with the fairies like her friends were doing, but she wouldn’t have it. How wonderful to have good friends to share such fun outings with!
Friday night I joined my Dining Divas for picnic fare while Chad spent his last night in town hosting a guys’ game night at our place. The next day he was off to the ESA meeting in Albuquerque. Sunday the kids and I celebrated the second anniversary of our move to Connecticut with a Greek feast.
A momentous occasion yesterday – our first beach day of the summer. (Doesn’t August 3 sound a little late for that?) Every time we’ve planned to go we’ve faced showers instead of sun. But this time we were in luck. We gathered up the beach umbrella, chairs, snacks, and sand toys and made for the
water. It felt great! After a nice swim we built castle walls, buried Arwen in the sand, and finished our current Magic Treehouse book. All too soon it was time to take off.
But there was more fun to come. We met some friends to celebrate what would have
been their daughter Katie’s 15th birthday, enjoying some cake under the tree planted in her honor on the grounds at our church. The kids ran around and played on the rocks while we adults sat on the grass and talked. Finally, we headed for home bringing with us friends Nathan, MaryLynn, and JJ for a sleepover. The boys took me by surprise by heading to bed early, while the girls
imitated circus performers till past my bedtime.
This morning we were off with the whole crew to Holmberg Orchards to pick blueberries. Then started today’s playdate at our place that spanned 13 children (not all at the same time) over six hours. The kids are having a ball, and so am I. Happy summer, everyone!

You seem to have endless reserves of energy for fun-packed schedules. What memories.
Seriously Elise--I must know what you are eating, what pillow you sleep on and what shampoo you use. You go, go, go--I am amazed. AMAZED!
