Out and About

What a week of excursions! Wednesday we took advantage of Gavin’s being out of school for the afternoon to revisit the Mystic Seaport (pass available from the Ledyard Bill Library). In the year and a half since our last visit, Gavin and Arwen have grown a lot and are finding new interests. While the boat playscape is still a huge draw, we spent a good amount of time building bridges in the canal exhibit and constructing treasure maps. On the way out I discovered the Buckingham-Hall house, with its huge hearth and kitchen garden out back. (Love that garden!) I can’t wait to get back for their cooking, weaving, and dressmaking demonstrations.

Friday night Arwen and Chad went for a whirl on the rides at the annual Kids Carnival sponsored by the local Navy base. Despite being an inch too short for some of the rides (including the Ferris wheel - ???), Arwen found plenty to do and thoroughly enjoyed the time with Daddy.

A few months ago while in his amazing research mode, Chad discovered a couple of interesting looking parks near the Boston Temple. This Saturday I got to check them out with the kids before attending the temple with Chad. Very cool! The first was Menotomy Rocks Park. With its fishing pond, playground, and shaded walking trails, it easily won me over. Later at Robbins Park, while the kids played on the playground and navigated the huge slide, I read about Farmer Robbins whose love for children led him to look the other way when they picked apples from his trees, and to eventually donate his land as a public playspace. We’ll definitely be heading back to both parks.

This is the time of year when wildflowers are at their peak. Sunday afternoon offered the perfect opportunity to check them out at the Connecticut College arboretum’s wildflower garden. Then there was the usual jumping off the stone wall, exploring the outdoor stage (the scene of last summer’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream performance), and walk around the pond. This time we even took a look at the cranberry bog.

Ever since it opened for the season a week ago, Gavin and Arwen have been begging to visit Cows & Cones. What a beautiful, serene hang out. After licking up the last of the ice cream, we wandered down to the fields for a close-up look at the new little black lamb as well as old friend Buster the cow. We’re looking forward to many return trips this summer.

Cows and cones sounds wonderful, as does the rest of it!
