Camping on Home Turf

Ever since arriving in Connecticut we’ve been looking forward to camping close to home. From Seattle we would often drive three hours to a remote camping spot but here there are campground-occupied bits of woods everywhere. So early Friday afternoon we packed up the car, retrieved Gavin from the bus stop for the last time this year (yes, he is sad to be done with school!), and embarked on the 60-minute drive to George Washington Campground in Rhode Island.

As we rendezvoused with our friends the Parents we discovered that we had reserved site unseen the most awesome dual campsite in the entire campground. Particularly for those with kids, it offers everything you could hope for. Within the two sites there’s plenty of room to ride bikes and a great area between the sites for shared meals (and trees to anchor the tarp in case of rain). The sites are as close as you can get to the boat launch and a lifeguarded beach with fun climbing rocks and are adjacent to a little stream and some hiking trails.

Needless to say we had a great time. On the way home we took a long detour (back roads are just so much more intriguing than the highway, especially when Chad’s doing the navigating) and saw some more of Rhode Island and Connecticut.
